Learning objectives
1) The course aims to develop students' knowledge on analysis of architectural and landscape property by providing them with operational tools to be used professionally in accordance with the regulations on the protection and enhancement of this heritage.
2) The 6 ECTS are structured in such a way as to acquire tools for the analysis of the architectural heritage and evaluate its recovery, enhancement limiting its alteration.
2 ECTS deal with the characterization of a building from an architectural, structural and functional point of view. 2 ECTS to acquire elements of structural diagnostics are dedicated to the impact of materials and construction techniques on the characterization of the cultural property; 1 ECTS deals with the question of the architectural style and the organization of the elements and compositional rules that determine the affirmation of building typology; 1 ECTS defines how to identify the building as cultural property and apply the authorization processes for guiding its enhancement.
The first 4 ECTS are borrowed from the teaching of "Integrated design and recovery of rural buildings of the CdS in Agricultural Sciences, looking at the ethno-anthropological value of rural buildings .
In developing the program, lectures are integrated with practical activities in order to understand how to apply the skills acquired to operate on safeguarding architectural heritage and its landscape.
3) The didactic contents conveyed by the teaching are connected to the common educational objectives of the course of study by deepening the operational tools aimed at the study, cataloging, conservation, protection, enhancement and promotion of cultural and landscape properties connected to architecture. The basis of training is a humanistic-historical structure, open to the use of the most modern investigation techniques and of the current legislation aimed at the recognition and protection of cultural heritage.The teaching contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the CdS consistently with the professional profiles and employment opportunities provided for the entire training course. The training received will give the graduate the tools to perform functions of high responsibility in the areas of conservation of architectural and landscape cultural heritage . He will be able to operate both at the level of diagnostics in support of restoration and protection and enhancement, as well as to analyse and coordinate on behalf of public institutions and private individuals involved in the conservation of cultural heritage the results of assessments in the context of specific diagnostic campaigns.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the teaching, the students should be able to:
1) Know techniques and methods to analyze built properties, examined in their environmental and landscape context, in the framework of the natural and anthropogenic risks to which they are subject and of the socio-economic variables by which they are influenced.
2) Understand the possibilities and limits to operate on existing heritage in accordance with the legislation on architectural and landscape cultural heritage
3) Apply knowledge and understanding developed in the exercises on case studies to operate at planning and decision-making level, also in support of the restoration, protection and enhancement of architectural heritage, promoted by public and private protection bodies or by territorial organizations.
4) Exercise critical, communicative and study transversal skills to introduce the results of the elaborations on selected case studies
5) Operate with autonomy to continue their studies and carry out the exercise of the profession. Mastery the scientific method of investigation and diagnostic techniques. Guide design and identification of the most suitable procedures for the recovery and enhancement architectural heritage also in complex realities. Support the survey and restoration of architectural, ethno-anthropological and monumental heritage included in territorial protection initiatives, as well as in projects for the protection and development of sites conservation.
Course syllabus and organization

Lesson period
First semester
In the context of the health emergency, the lessons will be held on the Microsoft Teams platform. Students will be able to follow class in synchrony, based on the timetable of the first semester, and asynchronously. Lessons for this purpose will be recorded and left available to attending students on the same platform for the first semester.
In order to support learning, meetings will periodically be organized with students. According to emergency, they will be in presence or in synchronous mode .
The program and reference material will not change. For each update, students are invited to consult the notice board on the Ariel teaching website
Course syllabus
Construction process of buildings (foundations, walls, ceilings and vaults, roofs and vertical links, choice of building materials)
Elements of analysis and diagnostics of built cultural heritage (secondary structures and non-structural elements, beams and pillars, construction actions, compression, traction, cutting, wind and snow actions, isostatic structures, binding and reactions, requirements and safety assessments) and assessment of urban and territorial systems, in their environment and in the context of natural and anthropic risks.
Morphologies development of human settlement. Stylistic characters and methods to assess cultural interest.
Reference framework for recovery, requalification and reorganization of the built cultural heritage at the different scales.

Teaching methods
To link theory and practice, providing criteria and methods for Architectural Cultural Heritage, the teaching methods combines lecture by teacher, Class discussion, Student reports by individuals, field surveys, individual analysis of case studies. Students will deepen topics learning on field activity to experiment and apply techniques and methods learned in different contexts of built cultural heritage. The development of a case study survey will allow students to deepen the knowledge of the morphologies of human settlements and of the techniques and tools for assessing, programming and planning the protection of architectural cultural heritage. A detailed guide for developing the case study will be made available during the lessons and a specific lesson of the course will be dedicated to guide students to tackle each point of the track. Revision, discussion and comparison will be carried out at the end of the lessons. Due to the applicative nature of the course, attendance at lessons is highly recommended, although it is not mandatory.

Self-employment of the student:
The autonomous work required of the student is divided into the following activities: individual study of the textbooks and teaching materials assigned by the teacher; free work on in-depth texts of your choice; carrying out of the exercises assigned by the teacher, through the drafting - individually or in small work groups - of thematic reports and technical documents.

Assessment methods and Criteria
In relation to the context of the health emergency, attending students will be considered those who participate, even asynchronously, in the class of the M.Teams platform. They also will be able to participate, even deferred, in the exercises proposed during the development of the lessons.
The final exam focuses on two compulsory tests:
- A written text (open questions), lasting one hour, focused on contents of the course.
- An oral text focused on practical tasks: Attending students will develop throughout the course a critical analysis of a case study on a built cultural property. This critical review will be deepened, updated and revised throughout the semester, and presented in a final seminar.
The final mark will combine together the evaluation of assigned task during the course and the assessment of written text.

Non-attending students are required to write a paper and introduce a presentation about a case study of a contemporary farmstead and to submit it a week before the final exam. The final examination will consist on:
A written test (open questions) about the contents of the course and the official list of bibliographical references.
An Oral examination (open questions) about the contents of the course and bibliography includind a further reading assigned by the teacher.
For the further reading choiced, a short note (2,000 words in length ) must be drawn up.

The written test consists of four open questions and one structural analysis exercise on rural buildings. If the rules do not allow attendance, the entire exam will take place orally using the M.Teams or Zoom platforms.
The final mark will be expressed in thirtieths. It will be the weighted average of the assessments achieved by the exam tests and case study developed
The evaluation parameters will be aimed at ascertaining:
-the achievement of the objectives in terms of knowledge and understanding
- the ability to apply knowledge and understanding through the discussion / evaluation of cases study concerning the enhancement of architectural property.
- the student's independence of judgment also through the analysis of case studies discussed during the course or illustrated in textbooks
- the language correctness and appropriateness relating to the for recovery, requalification and reorganization of the built cultural heritage at the different scales.
- the ability to explain the analyses and formulate hypothesis of development clearly and logically.
