Learning objectives
The course intends to foster the comprehension of the European colonial experience in North America with reference to Canadian history. Specific attention will be given to postcolonial period.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students must have an excellent knowledge of the main events of Canadian history from the European contact to present times.

Course syllabus
Unit 1:
The first unit will deal with the main events of French and British colonization in Canada and the following period from Confederation (1867) to World War I.

Unit 2:
The second unit will deal with Canadian contemporary history from 1919 to present times. Specific attention will be given to the history of Italian Canadians.
Prerequisites for admission
The students must have a good knowledge of the main events of Canadian history from the European contact to present times, which can be acquired trough the study of L. Codignola - L. Bruti Liberati, Storia del Canada, Milano, Bompiani, 2018.
Teaching methods
The course intends to foster the comprehension of contemporary Canada and its historical roots.
The course will focus on the analysis of the process that led to an independent Canadian Confederation (1867) and events from that date to present times will be addressed. Specific attention will be given to the relations between Canada and the United States and to the history of the Italian community in Canada.
During the course audiovisual material will be used.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will consist of an oral test aimed at ascertaining the students' knowledge of the history of European colonialism in North America with particular reference to Canada and its colonial and postcolonial history. It will be evaluated the students' ability to analyze the texts and the films included in the program.
