Improvement and Protection of Mountain Environments

The degree programme in the Valuation and Protection of Mountain Environments is designed to equip graduates with a basic grounding in the main sectors of agricultural and forest sciences, in addition to the methodologies of scientific investigation and experimentation. Graduates are qualified to assume technical, managerial and professional roles in the sphere of agrobiology and related technologies.
The course equips graduates with:
- a good basic knowledge of the agroforestry mountain sector;
- the ability to engage in various aspects of the organisation of mountain production activities, with particular reference to the protection of territorial balance, environmental defence and rural development;
- good communication and information management competences and tools;
- the ability to work as part of a group with a set degree of autonomy, and to quickly integrate themselves into working environments.
Graduates in the Valuation and Protection of Mountain Environments can pursue careers in the following sectors: agrozootechnical and forest productions, technical assistance, public and private administration, research and teaching.
Graduates possess competences in:
- the technical and economic management of agricultural and forestry resources and their interrelationships with other sectors (craftsmanship, commerce, tourism, etc.);
- integrated development projects, with particular reference to upland farms;
- soil conservation, particularly in relation to environmentally friendly procedures and the management of protected areas and nature parks;
- the management of eco-sustainable tourism and farm holiday activities;
- the development of historic and cultural alpine resources;
- the production and use of agroforestry products;
- the management of multifunctional zootechnical and pastoral activities;
- the marketing of typical mountain products;
- technical assistance for upland farms.
Admission requirements
Good basic knowledge of high-school subjects, with a focus on technical and scientific ones.
Skills assessment
Access to the programme is regulated by a compulsory test to ascertain that the student meets admission requirements, i.e. a knowledge of basic scientific disciplines (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology) equal to that provided by high school, and an understanding of elementary logic. The required test is a TOLC CISIA Online Test. You can sit for the TOLC test at the University of Milan or any other member university of CISIA (inter-university consortium for integrated access systems) on multiple dates. Please register on the CISIA website ( www.cisiaonline.it ): the TOLC test providing access to the programme is TOLC-AV. You can find information on the test in the call for applications published on the University website (https://www.unimi.it/en/education/improvement-and-protection-mountain-environments ). The call will also specify admission procedures for students from other degree programmes of the University of Milan, or from other universities, or already holding a university degree.
Additional Learning Requirements (OFA)
Admitted students who have not achieved the minimum score set out in the call for applications, in the mathematics section, will have to fulfil Additional Learning Requirements (OFA). These requirements can be met through specific remedial activities. Mathematics OFA are prerequisites for all second- and third-year exams. Students who do not attend OFA remedial activities or do not pass the final OFA test will have to pass the Mathematics exam as a prerequisite to take all second- and third-year exams.
Bridging courses
To fill any knowledge gaps shown by test results, the Faculty may provide short bridging courses or tutoring activities before or during the programme. Attendance is strongly recommended to all those who have shown any gaps.
Initiatives will be promptly notified on the degree programme website ( https://vtatm.cdl.unimi.it/it ).
The degree programme in Improvement and Protection of Mountain Environments provides ample opportunities to study or work abroad, mainly through the Erasmus+ programme, which has around 30 EU member universities, and the Swiss Mobility Programme. Globally, about 5 students seize this opportunity each year. The fields that can be developed at partner universities cover all the specific areas of the degree programme. Most students are inclined to follow courses that will broaden their scientific knowledge, or to carry out internships or degree theses in established laboratories. The learning agreement is defined in cooperation with the study programme's Erasmus manager, both for the choice of exams and the organization of the internship at the partner university. Before completing the learning agreement, you must obtain the formal approval of the exams to be taken at the host university by teachers holding equivalent or similar courses at the University of Milan. The conduct of an experimental activity abroad, as part of or the entire internship activity, requires a letter of consent from a teacher of the partner university and the formal approval of the objectives, the project and the internship period by a teacher of the study programme acting as supervisor.
Grades and credits awarded by partner universities are almost entirely recognized. Students thus know that Erasmus activities will be positively assessed in their curriculum. There are other opportunities for cultural exchanges with universities that are not part of the Erasmus system but have signed agreements with our university. These belong to non-EU areas such as China, Japan, Latin America.
