Medicine and Surgery - Sacco Hospital Location
The degree programme is designed to provide graduates with both a solid, up-to-date scientific understanding of medicine, and a deep appreciation of the human and social complexities associated with health and disease.
Graduates must therefore possess both a sound scientific grounding, and the requisite theoretical, practical and social preparation to practice medicine.
Students will be encouraged to dedicate constant attention to the human aspects of health and disease and to develop the capacity to confront medical problems using a scientific approach and methodology, which they will also build upon through their participation in research projects.
Students will also be equipped to analyse data critically and autonomously, verifying their scientific basis while always taking health costs into consideration.
Medicine and Surgery graduates can enter medical and surgery occupations in the various professional clinical, healthcare and bio-medical positions and sectors.
The Medicine and Surgery degree programme provides an entry point to the State Examination required to qualify to practice as a surgeon-physician, upon successful completion of which it is then possible to register with the relevant professional body.
The Medicine and Surgery degree qualification is also a prerequisite for entering Specialisation Schools in the medical sphere and the Regional School of General Medicine.
Application and admission: Limited enrolment with admission test.
Students must have level B2 proficiency in English. Proficiency may be certified at the time of matriculation by submitting a certificate of level B2 language proficiency or better, or by sitting the SLAM (University Language Centre) Placement test during the first year of studies only, between September and December.
Students who do not pass the test must follow the SLAM language courses and obtain appropriate certification within the year the plan of study calls for a language exam.
The duration of these courses depends on the placement obtained in the initial test. The achievement of level B2 language proficiency is a prerequisite for the preparation course in medical and scientific English, required by the degree programme.
The single-cycle Master's Degree Programme in Medicine (Vialba Campus) promotes training periods abroad and offers assistance to interested students. Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus applications are steadily increasing. Before submitting the Learning Agreement to the Erasmus Coordinator, each candidate has the opportunity to discuss it with the President of the Degree Programme.
Students can thus take full advantage of the experience in a foreign university. The marks obtained from Spanish universities are converted according to a specific table published in the Regulations of the Degree Programme.
The recognition and transcription of grades obtained in other EU countries is based on the ECTS conversion table. The Erasmus+ programme offers a wide choice of opportunities throughout Europe, with many students choosing rotations in European countries, particularly Spain and Portugal. Others prefer US universities for clinical and research activities. Following positive feedback, the single-cycle Master's Degree Programme in Medicine (Vialba Campus) has recently joined the AAMC-GHLO programme, expanding its range of international exchanges. The GHLO facilitates collaborations with Medicine schools in the US and all over the world. The recognition of credits and grades is guaranteed by bilateral agreements.
Clinical rotations and research activities are the areas of greatest profit for students engaged in international rotations. Therefore, the ideal time to join the programme is from third to sixth year. Rotations in the sixth year are generally focused on thesis work.
Every year we also host foreign students, mostly from Germany and Eastern European countries. They value our academic tradition and appreciate Italian hospitality. The difficulty of offering affordable accommodation is the biggest obstacle to attracting more foreign students. However, we are proactively seeking appropriate solutions.
