Viticulture and Enology

The degree programme provides interdisciplinary training in the biological and technological principles associated with grapevine cultivation and wine production. Graduates are qualified to work as technicians and professionals in the viticulture and oenology sectors and in the management of wineries.
On the strength of their competences, graduates can pursue careers in the following occupations:
- at the "vineyard" level, in the improvement of varietal selection, cultivation, grapevine conservation and harvesting techniques;
- at the "cellar" level, in connection with the technical management of the wine production chain and quality issues connected with the production of wine and other fermented drinks, liquors and distillates; at the "laboratory" level, in the ampelographic classification of grapevines, yeast selection and the chemical, physical and sensorial classification of wine products; at the "company" level, in economic management and the marketing sector.
Viticulture and Enology graduates possess the necessary competences to engage in:
- consultancy services, management and administration of wineries engaged in the production and processing of grapevines, and the refinement, conservation, bottling and commercialisation of derived products;
- varietal selection, planting and plant health considerations in vineyards;
- managerial roles in wine authorities, associations and consortia;
- the certification of microbiological, wine chemistry and sensory wine analyses;
- the design of wineries, through the selection of the technologies used in plants and facilities;
- the distribution and commercialisation of wine products, including communication, marketing and image-related processes.
Admission requirements
A previous good level of knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, correspondent to that assured by high school. Good knowledge of a foreign language (English or French) is strongly recommended.
Skills assessment
Access to the programme is regulated by a compulsory test to ascertain that the student meets admission requirements, i.e. a sufficient knowledge of basic principles of scientific disciplines (mathematics , physics, chemistry, biology) correspondent to that assured by high school, and a sufficient level of understanding of elementary logic.
The students can take the test through the TOLC-AV platform (CISIA Online Test – Agriculture and Veterinary version) on multiple dates. Test dates, times, venues and procedures, as well as the admission requirements, will be set out in the call for applications published on the website: https://www.unimi.it/en/education/viticulture-and-enology. The call will also specify admission procedures for students from other degree programmes of the University of Milan, or from other universities, or already holding a university degree.
Additional Learning Requirements (OFA)
Admitted students who have not achieved the minimum score (60% of correct answers) in mathematics will have to satisfy Additional Learning Requirements (OFA). These requirements can be satisfied through specific recovery activities.
Mathematics OFA are prerequisites for all second- and third-year exams. Students who do not attend OFA recovery activities or do not pass the final OFA test will have to pass the Mathematics exam as a prerequisite to take all second- and third-year exams.
Initiatives will be timely advertised on the website https://www.unimi.it/en/education/faculties-and-schools/agricultural-and-food-sciences.
Bridging courses
To satisfy any knowledge gaps highlighted in test results, the Faculty may provide short bridging courses or tutoring activities before or during the programme. Attendance is strongly recommended to all those who have suffered any gaps.
The degree programme in Viticulture and Enology provides ample student mobility opportunities, mainly through the Erasmus+ programme, which has around 30 EU member universities. The fields that can be developed at partner universities cover all the specific areas of the degree programme. Most students are inclined to follow courses that will broaden their scientific knowledge, or to carry out internships or degree theses in established laboratories. The learning agreement is defined in cooperation with the study programme's Erasmus manager, both for the choice of exams and the organization of the internship at the partner university. Before completing the learning agreement, you must obtain the formal approval of the exams to be taken at the host university by teachers holding equivalent or similar courses at the University of Milan. The conduct of an experimental activity abroad, as part of or the entire internship activity, requires a letter of consent from a teacher of the partner university and the formal approval of the objectives, the project and the internship period by a teacher of the study programme acting as supervisor.
Grades and credits awarded by partner universities are almost entirely recognized. Students thus know that Erasmus activities will be positively assessed in their curriculum.
There are other opportunities for cultural exchanges with universities that are not part of the Erasmus system but have signed agreements with our university. These belong to non-EU areas such as China, Japan and Latin America.
